What do you most want to learn?

Warm-up (set the context)

Get them talking about their world, not your idea.

  • Walk me through a typical week, as it relates to this problem.
  • What is your role, and how does this problem fit into your day?
  • What is the hardest part about this problem right now?

The problem (ask about the past, not hypotheticals)

Anchor every answer to a real, specific event that already happened.

  • When was the last time this problem came up? Walk me through exactly what happened.
  • What were you doing right before that?
  • How often does that happen?
  • Why was that hard or annoying?
  • What did it actually cost you, in time, money, or stress?

How they cope today

If they have not built a workaround, the pain may not be real.

  • How do you handle this problem today?
  • What have you already tried to fix it?
  • What tools or services do you use for this now, and what do they cost?
  • What do you dislike most about the way you do it currently?

Money and seriousness

Look for evidence they already spend to solve this, not promises.

  • Have you searched for a better solution? What did you type in?
  • Have you paid for anything to deal with this? How much?
  • Who would need to approve a purchase like this?
  • What would have to be true for you to switch to something new?

Close and referrals

End every conversation with a concrete next step.

  • Is there anything I should have asked about this problem but did not?
  • Who else deals with this that I should talk to?
  • Can I come back to you when I have something to show?

Never ask these

They are leading or hypothetical, so they only buy you polite lies.

  • Do you think this is a good idea?
  • Would you buy a product that did this?
  • How much would you pay for something like this?
  • Would you use an app that solved this problem?
  • Does this sound useful to you?

What is the Mom Test?

The Mom Test, from Rob Fitzpatrick, is a set of rules for customer interviews. The core idea: even your mum will lie to you if you ask whether your idea is good. So you never ask about your idea at all. You ask about their life, their past behaviour, and what they already do and pay for. Specifics about the past are facts. Opinions about the future are noise.

This generator assembles a script from those rules: warm-up, problem discovery anchored to real events, how they cope today, money and seriousness, and a close that asks for a concrete next step. It also lists the leading and hypothetical questions to avoid, the ones that produce false encouragement and kill startups slowly.
