The Mom Test

The Mom Test is a set of rules for customer interviews, from Rob Fitzpatrick, designed to get honest answers by talking about the customer's life and past behavior instead of pitching your idea.

Why it matters

Customer interviews are where most validation goes wrong, because people lie to be nice. Ask "would you use this?" and you get polite yeses that mean nothing. The Mom Test fixes this by banning questions about your idea and focusing on facts: what they already do, what they have already paid for, what went wrong last time. Specifics about the past are data. Opinions about the future are noise.

Worked example

Bad: "Would you pay for an app that does X?" Good: "Walk me through the last time you dealt with X. What did you do, and what did it cost you?"
