Building a startup takes months of your life. Validating the idea takes less than an hour. Yet, 90% of founders skip validation and jump straight into VS Code or Figma.
This is the ultimate startup idea validation checklist. It is designed to act as a series of “gates.” If your idea fails a gate early on, you should seriously consider pivoting before proceeding to the next one.
The 7-Step Checklist
The Painkiller Test
Are people actively complaining about this problem? If you search Reddit for this topic, do you see frustrated users or silence?
The Search Volume Test
Are people actively Googling for a solution? If there is zero search volume for high-intent keywords (e.g. “software for X”), you will have to educate the market, which is incredibly expensive.
The Zone Fit Test
Do you have an unfair advantage in this specific industry? Are you building software for dentists because you were a dentist, or are you just guessing what dentists need?
The Reach Test
Do you know exactly where these customers hang out? Can you list 3 specific Facebook groups, Subreddits, or newsletters where your audience is concentrated?
The Willingness to Pay Test
Is the target audience known to spend money to solve problems? Consumers rarely pay for productivity tools. B2B businesses pay thousands to save hours.
The Buildability Test
Can you (and your co-founders) build the MVP in less than 30 days? If it requires complex ML models or hardware manufacturing, the risk multiplies.
The Clear Lane Test
Who are the competitors? If you are fighting 10 well-funded incumbents (like trying to build a new CRM), the lane is blocked. You want to compete against Excel spreadsheets and pen-and-paper.
How to Score Your Checklist
You can run through this checklist manually, but human bias is a real problem. We all want to believe our ideas are great. When you score yourself, you will naturally inflate the numbers.
To prevent this, you should use data to score the checklist.
- For Step 1 (Pain):Don't just guess. Go to Reddit and read exactly what people are saying.
- For Step 2 (Search Volume): Use Google Keyword Planner or Ahrefs.
- For Step 7 (Competition): Check G2, Capterra, and Product Hunt. Look at the negative reviews of the biggest competitors.
