The Reddit Gripe-Hunting Swipe File
People post their problems on Reddit every day. This is the exact list of subreddits and search strings to find them.
A copy-and-paste swipe file: where to look, the search strings that surface complaints, how to tell a real gripe from noise, and how to turn what you find into a validated idea.
What is inside
Where to look
Start broad, then narrow to your target buyer. Swap in the niche subreddits for your space.
- Broad founder pain: r/Entrepreneur, r/smallbusiness, r/startups
- Software and indie: r/SaaS, r/webdev, r/sysadmin, r/msp
- Commerce and creators: r/ecommerce, r/shopify, r/juststart
- Money and ops: r/accounting, r/bookkeeping, r/freelance
- Your buyer by job: search Reddit for the role or industry (for example r/realestate, r/dentistry, r/restaurateur).
Search strings that surface pain
Paste these into Reddit search, swapping [niche] for your space.
- "is there a tool that" [niche]
- "is there an app for" [niche]
- "how do you all deal with" [niche]
- "how do you guys handle" [niche]
- "i hate that" [niche]
- "frustrated with" [incumbent or task]
- "alternative to" [incumbent]
- "[incumbent] is too expensive"
- "i wish there was"
Google works better than Reddit search
Reddit search is weak. Use Google with a site filter.
- site:reddit.com "is there a tool" [niche]
- site:reddit.com "i wish" [niche]
- site:reddit.com "any recommendations for" [niche]
- Add a time filter (past year) to find gripes that are still current.
What a real gripe looks like
Most posts are noise. Look for the signal.
- The same complaint shows up again and again from different people.
- There is emotion in it: anger, resignation, a long rant.
- It costs money or time, and they say so.
- People describe a clumsy workaround (a spreadsheet, a VA, a manual process).
- Someone literally asks "is there a tool for this?" and nobody has a good answer.
Log it, then turn it into an idea
- For each gripe, save the quote, the subreddit, and the date.
- Tag how often it appears and what the current workaround costs.
- Cluster similar gripes. The biggest, most painful, most frequent cluster is your candidate.
- Then validate it properly: talk to the people, and test demand before you build.
Questions
Why Reddit for startup ideas?
People complain on Reddit in their own words, unprompted and for free. That is far more honest than a survey, and the repeated complaints point straight at problems worth solving.
How do I avoid chasing noise?
Only act on gripes that repeat across people, carry real emotion, and cost money or time. One angry post is an anecdote; the same complaint ten times is a signal.
